How to keep a long distance relationship?

Now that your partner is continents away, thousand of miles away from you. You feel lonely and want to talk to your partner badly. What can you do?

If we were back in the 1800s, the only way to communicate was probably by mail, or by taking a month-long boat ride to see each other. But hey, we are now in the 21st century, there are lots of technology innovations that can help us communicate, even though we cannot be in touch physically!

Some means that we can have:

Audio technologies

  • Long distance calls -- price of long distance calls have dramatically decreased over the years!
  • Calling cards -- if landline / cellphone long distance rates are still prohibitively high in your area, you should buy a calling card and this could dramatically lower your rate!

  • PC Calls / Broadband Phone -- a lot of instant messengers or companies have introduced VoIP calling, basically you can call to a real telephone number from your PC. The cost is obviously lower than that offered by the traditional telecom companies. Occassionally there are some quality glitches. But in general, the quality is very acceptable.

    Furthermore, these days you can sign up for a telephone number that is not in your local area. For example, if your partner is in the UK, you can probably sign up for an UK number, no matter where you are in the world. Then your partner can call you at flat rate or local rate!

    Some of the companies are:

    • Vonage
    • Skype -- in fact, until Dec 31 2006, if you reside in North America, you can make calls within North America for free. Furthermore, they are running weekend promotions where users can make free calls to a particularly country over the weekend.
  • Instant messengers -- now that most instant messengers have audio support. So basically if you and your partner have internet access, you can definitely listen to your other half's complaints with almost zero costs! Some of the popular instant messengers are:

Obviously, in our Internet age, there is always email. And using internet as a medium, you can share your daily pictures and videos with your loved one using sites such as:

  • Kodak Gallery
  • Drop Shots

Lastly, if you want to broadcast your feelings to all your loved ones in the world, you can capture what is happening in your life by writing a blog. Writing a blog or having a video blog is the in-thing du jour!
